The Relationship Between Science, Technology, and Society

Science and technology is the best thing society could ever ask for. Since the industrial revolution in the 18th century science has been in progress. Some sectors that have been boosted by science and technology are energy, physical sciences, information and communication. The society has greatly gained with the invention of technology.

Infrastructure in the society has grown with the help of science and technology. Modes of transport like electronic railway lines were realized and these actually benefited the society by offering them a better means of transport. In the past, almost everything was analog but thanks to the science and technology we are now being digitalized by the day. The invention of the telephone and radio services has broadened human communication.

Without society then there would be no science and technology and that is why the invention of certain tools and equipment have helped achieve big things. Society can not do without the industries we have today. The society needs science and technology. The creation of computers is work of art by individuals was a milestone that would come a long way in helping the society. A computer helps us to leverage ourselves by gaining valuable information that we can use to enrich our lives. The impact of science and technology can seriously be recognized. Many people around the world take for example scholars in colleges and universities have taken the lead examining the relationship between science and technology.

The evaluation of this relationship has emerged as an important area of research. Public interest groups and academic organizations throughout the world are recognizing the importance of STS. The reason is that people need to recognize that there are people who are affected by the science and technology. Controversies such as modified foods, stem cell research are the issues that have brought policy makers and scientists together to have a way forward on this.

Science and technology has actually largely contributed to the vision of man about himself. Science has been modified the opinion about the origin of man and place of origin too. Through the results of scientific discoveries the perception of man about his behavior and his place of origin has been modified diversly. Experiments in science today are in one way or another affecting the society.Take for example the experiment on cloning a human being. The experiment brought a lot of controversy since the society was skeptical about it.

How is science and technology related to society: The developing world has a long tradition of participatory action research, popular education and community organization joining up to solve some science and technology issues that affect the society. How is science and technology related to the society is something that is calling even for the government intervention. Science and technology related issues are actually been discussed worldwide today. Progress in this has resulted to the ability to produce diverse types of material items. Answering the question how science and technology is related to society.

The Addictive Society and Cannabis

This is the first of a three-part series about the contextual influences modern society has on mood disorders and addictions, 2) the risks of buy-in, and 3) the possibility of soul renewal via (but not limited to)therapeutic cannabis use.

Part I: The Addictive System

“We live in a society bloated with data yet starved for wisdom. We’re connected 24/7, yet anxiety, fear, depression and loneliness is at an all-time high. We must course-correct.” ~Elizabeth Kapu’uwailani Lindsey

The “addictive system” (1) is the elephant in the living room. Mood disorders and addictions, like everything else, do not occur in a vacuum. Yet we tend to miss the overarching societal ‘space’ when only focused on individual issues, like depression and anxiety or opioid and social-media addictions.

What exactly is this context?

It is an invisible psychological environment, the backdrop within which people are unwittingly succumbing to addiction or suffering mood disorders. The rise in antidepressant prescriptions and the number of suicides profile the growing dark side of modern society.

It is a complex, interconnected web of public (government) and private corporations, aligned with the media in the marketing and advertising of information, products and services 24/7: a surround-sound cacophony of targeted messaging designed to shape both public opinion and an ever-stronger consumer mindset.

Some call it propaganda.

Intangible, psychological concepts are applied to marketing and sales, ones that supposedly drive all humans: the perceived need for: social status, safety, winning, the right image, having the best, looking good, gaining an edge, keeping up with your neighbor, excellence, being the first, etc. Advertising messages then weave-in the promise of helping the ‘consumer’ achieve one or another of these intangible goals when they purchase their information, product and/or service. The ubiquity of these messages in modern society have become normalized and even welcomed.

How did we get here?

Edward Bernays, in early to mid-20th century, is most likely the person who set the bar for public relations and advertising in the U.S. He was the nephew to the well-known psychiatrist, Sigmund Freud, and like his uncle before him, Bernays believed in the predictability of the human unconscious when it came to the human and psychological motivations of self-preservation, security, aggression and sex.

He transferred what he learned from his uncle to help launch his career in public relations and became wildly successful. Due to his efforts on behalf of the pork industry in 1915, bacon became a mainstay of the traditional breakfast. In the 1920’s he make smoking fashionable for women by calling cigarettes “torches of freedom” to advance the tobacco industry, and established fluoride as indispensable to dentistry in the 1930’s (a waste product of aluminum) for his client, Alcoa Aluminum. Swift’s Criticism of Society in "A Modest Proposal"

Anglo-Irish writer Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” (anonymously published in 1729) is a powerful political satire about the economic and social conditions of the poor in Ireland under British rule. The essay is rich with references to political events in England and Ireland in the 18th century. Swift takes ‘irony’ as the best weapon to attack on all kinds of vice and injustice prevailing in the society. Now we will see how Swift criticizes the society in his essay.

Before, entering into our discussion we are to know something the miserable condition of that Ireland. Actually the misfortune of Ireland begins when, in 1541, the Irish recognizes England’s Henry viii, a Protestant, as king of Ireland. The protestant landlords acquire almost ten percent of estates. Meanwhile, a law is enacted limiting the rights of Irish to hold government office, purchase, real estate and get education. Consequently, many of Irish flee away and those who remain live in poverty disease and starvation.

The essayist, at the very beginning of the essay, states the deplorable economic condition and social picture of Ireland under the British rule. As the author says:

“IT is a melancholly Object to those, who walk through this great Town, or travel in the Country; when they see the Streets, the Roads, and Cabbin-doors crowded with Beggars of the Female Sex, followed by three, four, or six Children, all in Rags, and importuning every Passenger for an Alms.”

Moreover, the author fears that, when the infants of these beggars grow up, “either turn Thieves for want of Work; or leave their dear Native Country, to fight for the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbadoes.”

This miserable situation is, in fact, resulted by the indifference of English administration and the oppression of landlords. Instead of solving the problem the British government shows a great carelessness to the repeated appeals to feed those hungry mouths.

Now, swift, as an English patriot finds out a “fair, cheap, and easy Method of making these Children sound and useful Members of the Commonwealth”. He wants to come with a proposal in such a manner, as he says:

“… as, instead of being a Charge upon their Parents, or the Parish, or wanting Food and Raiment for the rest of their Lives; they shall, on the contrary, contribute to the Feeding, and partly to the Cloathing, of many Thousands.”

Swift criticizes the authority by prospecting that this scheme “will prevent those voluntary Abortions, and that horrid Practice of Women murdering their Bastard Children” which is “too frequent among us”. His criticism towards the English administration becomes more clear when he doubts that, the poor innocent babies are killed “more to avoid the Expence than the Shame”. The author mocks the intellectuals and the policy makers of the time by proposing his grotesque proposal in the most formal manner with a great gravity. As the essayist comments:

“I SHALL now therefore humbly propose my own Thoughts; which I hope will not be liable to the least Objection.”

Now we will have a look on his proposal. In his proposal Swift suggests that a significant portion of Irish children should be slaughtered and their carcasses should be sold to the wealthy as well as landlords so that the poor parents can be economically benefited and get rid of the burden of the maintenance. The essayist criticizes the brutal mentality of the authority, as they never considered Irish as human being. To indicate their meanness, the essayist uses such words which are best suitable for the animal not for the human being. He uses the word, for example, ‘carcasses’, remains of dead animals dressed by butchers, to refer the remains of children prepared as meat.

Again, the essayist equates the oppressors with the butchers as they mercilessly snatch away the bread from the hand of the Irish children and rush them to the way of death. As the author says:

“…and Butchers we may be assured will not be wanting”

The essayist also criticizes the landlords for their aggressive attitude to the poor Irish. As Swift remarks:

“I GRANT this Food will be somewhat dear and therefore very proper for Landlords; who, as they have already devoured most of the Parents, seem to have the best Title to the Children.”

Swift stabs the authorities for their mistreatment to the Irish poor prospecting that, they will be very glad to eat human flesh as they have lost their sense.

“I could name a Country, which would be glad to eat up our whole Nation without it.”

The author also criticizes the fashionable ladies and the so called gentle folk of the society. As he says:

“THOSE who are more thrifty (as I must confess the Times require) may flay the Carcase; the Skin of which, artificially dressed, will make admirable Gloves for Ladies, and Summer Boots for fine Gentlemen.”

Swift, in order to criticize the society, ironically shows six benefit of the proposal.

Firstly: it will reduce the total number of Catholics, the enemy of the Protestants.

Secondly: the poor parents will get some money with which they can pay landlords rent.

Thirdly: the money will circulate among the Irish and increases national income.

Fourthly: the mothers will get rid of the charge of maintaining the children after the first year.

Fifthly: the empty taverns will be full with a huge number of customers.

Finally: it will be a great encouragement to marriage and increase the care and the tenderness of mother to their children.

Actually Swift’s proposal shocks every reader even the cruel barbarian can not think of such a cannibalistic idea of eating man’s flesh. Everyone with common sense can easily understand that out of extreme agony the essayist gives such suggestion. He wants to say beneath this proposal that government should take this proposal if they can not solve the problem immediately.

At the end of the essay, the bitter criticism is clear when the essayist terminates the proposal ensuring the readers that he has not least interest rather the public good of his country. As he says:

“I have no Children, by which I can propose to get a single penny; the youngest being nine Years old, and my Wife past Child-bearing.”

Swifts, by this easy, very successfully draws the attention of the authority as well as the readers. Robert Phiddian has written an essay entitled “Have You Eaten Yet” after reading this essay.

Some scholar argues that, “A Modest Proposal” is largely influenced by Tertullian’s “Apology”. James William Johnson points out the same central theme in both of the essay. Both of the essays are similar in their tone and the use of irony.

Last of all, it can be said that Jonathan Swift very successfully uses his mighty pen against the English oppressors by ridiculing their so called vanity as the writer knows that, the devil is brave in the face of threat, strong hearted before the tears and vulnerable only in the Achilles’ heel of his vanity.

It is hard to make these kinds of changes on your own. A sport psychologist, coach or mentor can often be quite helpful in building confidence, reducing anxiety, improving focus and in showing you how to enter the zone more often.

If your scores are very low, you can probably benefit from some counseling, mental toughness training or training in self-hypnosis.

Getting Recruited Isn’t the Only Way to Get a Sports Scholarship

You might be one of those people that perform very well when it comes to sports. If you are and you are in high school, you might have the idea that your ability at a given sport could end up putting you in line for a sports scholarship that will either entirely pay for college, or at least partially pay for your higher education. However, there is more to getting a scholarship than just being good at sports.

One thing you have to understand is that with sports scholarship there are a few ways to get them. For some, especially in the more high profile sports like football and basketball, you have a good chance at being recruited; however, not all scholarships that are sports related come from athletes being recruited.

In many cases, if you are looking for a sports scholarship, for whatever sport you happen to play, you might just have to ask. With so many high school athletes, it is conceivable that your talents at a given sport are heads and shoulders above most people; but there is still the possibility you will be overlooked. There are too many athletes and only a small number of coaches and recruits, comparatively speaking.

Sometimes you will have to contact a coach yourself, offer them up your statistics, not only on the field of play but your grades as well. In essences, you are going to have to recruit them, much like a college coach might recruit a person of superior talent.

Consider this, in most scholarship situations, a person has to ask for one rather than them being solicited for a scholarship. In fact, the way scholarships are offered to potential students are less normal and less common than the traditional way of getting a scholarship, which is to request one.

Another to remember is that you will have to be persistent as well. You will have to be aware that you might hear no a lot. However, if you have the skills and you have the talent, and of course you’ll need the grades as well, you will eventually find a sports scholarship that fits your needs.

The fact is that there are plenty of sports scholarship to go around. Some might be full scholarships, others might be partial scholarships, and it is wise to not get too far ahead of yourself and only look for full scholarships as the only option. While they do exist, they are not easy to get and when it comes to paying for college these days, any help paying for it is welcome, or at least it should be.

The Top 5 Sports Books of All Time

There have been thousands of sports books written throughout the years. Some have been absolute crap and most are mediocre at best, but there are that select few that remain deep-seated in our memories as classics. Below is my Top 5 of all time. There are some popular books missing – either because I don’t think it is as good as everyone else, or because I haven’t read it.

5. Foul Ball, By Jim Bouton – Bouton gives a candid look at a corrupt sports town. All he wants to do is keep a classic stadium alive, but local businesses and politicians oppose him for selfish reasons. They will do what’s right for their businesses regardless of the effects on the community. Beyond sports, their actions also are detrimental to the health and well being of those who live there. It’s amazing how greedy and selfish some people can be…and Bouton exposes them ALL.

4. Eight Men Out, By Eliot Asinof – This was a very, very interesting read and that is why I rate it so high. I am absolutely obsessed with the perplexing depth of this scandal. However Asinof presents a TON of evidence about the scandal, so much so that it can be a bit overwhelming. I probably need to go back and read it again to get the whole story down. It reads a lot like a really good history book about the Black Sox.

3. Friday Night Lights, By H.G. Bissinger – One of the things that drives me nuts about Odessa is that H.G. Bissinger wrote a very fair observation of the current state of their town and they treat him like he’s the devil to this day. Rather than acknowledge that maybe they shouldn’t put so much pressure on their young athletes and that maybe they needed to re-evaluate what is truly important to them, they chose to shoot the messenger. Maybe people shouldn’t be taught that the most important thing in the world is a high-school football game. I applaud Bissinger for his efforts.

2. Moneyball, By Michael Lewis – This is an absolutely amazing story about success. The book is far more than baseball – it shows the value of statistical analysis in equalizing and unequal playing field. Like the cover says, it teaches the ‘Art of Winning an Unfair Game’. I can’t stand narrow minded baseball purists that don’t see the value in what Billy Beane does. The man succeeds in spite of nearly insurmountable odds. Who couldn’t learn something from him?

1. Ball Four, By Jim Bouton – This is one of the most entertaining books I’ve ever read. Who wouldn’t enjoy reading stories about Mickey Mantle and his crazy flings? Bouton’s stories were so controversial that he was banished from the Yankee community for a long time. He is so honest and down to earth that by the end of the book it feels like Bouton is one of your buddies. All sports fans NEED to read this.

Kids and Sports – The Power of Positive Mental Attitudes

Most would agree that positive mental attitude has power especially when it comes to kids playing youth sports. It would be very difficult to debate otherwise and I am sure you agree. Youth sports programs must work hard to constantly promote a positive attitude. This can be done through careful coaching and teaching kids respect for the game and integrity on the field.

Still, but there is truly no greater feeling than winning after you have worked hard to get there and played your heart out. Just ask the late Vince Lombardi, as it builds character to win, when you deserve it or if you lose but gave it every last ounce of your existence. This also develops a positive mental attitude that is re-enforced through the team and coach.

One gentleman that wishes to bring these great attitudes to youth sports is Charles Hellman, Founder of LuckySports. I believe this is noble: “LuckySports believes that youth sports should recognize a good coach and parental positive attitude and promote it until it becomes the industry standard for youth sports.” and worthy. It’s a great simple mission statement in and of itself, even without all the other lessons in his works.

If we can teach kids to do their best in sports, follow the rules, and build character, then our society will be so much more ahead in the future. The children are our future; they will soon be running things, sooner than we know. By promoting sports, fairness, and respect for the game with children and teens now, we will be building integrity into the next generation. Think on this.

The Inspiration Of Youth Sports Stars

As a young man, I was in youth track and cross-country and was able to rank nationally, and post 4-consecutive years with no loss and all first place, and I was lucky to find something I was good at early on in my life. I didn’t realize it back then when people use to come up and want to meet me and tell me how much they enjoyed watching me run and win. Today, I do understand, as it is an innate sense we have to watch others, especially underdogs, overcome and win. Perhaps why the Rocky series movies were so popular and why people like movies like the Karate Kid.

Recently, I watched a very inspirational YouTube video about a young athlete. A 7th grader cross-country runner who beat all the high girls at the State Championships, her name is Grace Ping. You might want to watch the following videos yourself:

1). “Grace Ping [GP], 7th grader, takes down the ENTIRE 2015 Roy Griak high school field” on the FloTrack Channel.

2). “GP Not Allowed to Race NXN” on the MileSplit Channel

3). “GP After Racing Pro 3K At UW Indoor” on the MileSplit Channel

4). “GP Story” Sean Tehan Channel

5). “GP – Athlete Of The Week” Chris Barriere Channel

One commenter wrote: “why am I watching this video, I’m not even in track let alone athletic.”

My reply was simple: “Because you love an individual with that level of spirit and will to win. We all do.”

You see, it makes us feel alive, it makes us smile and see someone go beyond, go the distance, defy the odds and win. Americans will always hold such values and hold a special place in our hearts for those who remind us what we are capable of. It turns out the super cross-country runner Grace is not just an anomaly – she is also a cross country skier – and those long skiing training endeavors helped her develop strong cardio, will, determination, high pain threshold, and legs of steal, even for a 13 year old.

It is amazing what the human body is capable of, and yes, she obviously has good genetics for running, but it’s more than that, it’s her intense training, training that is transferable from skiing to running. Interestingly enough most skills are transferable, especially the human trait of perseverance. She’s got that, and well, so do you. She’s found her “inner winner” and maybe it is time that you found yours too. Please consider all this and think on it.
